BetterFleet Selected by Mountain Line to Support Electric Bus Operations with Advanced Charge Management

Missoula, Mont., March 4, 2026 — Mountain Line has selected BetterFleet to deliver a charge management and fleet operations platform that will support daily service, optimize energy use, and enable the agency’s continued transition toward a fully electric bus fleet.

Since introducing its first battery-electric buses in 2019, Mountain Line has rapidly become a national leader in zero-emission transit. The agency operates a regional fleet that is already nearly 90 percent electric, with a commitment that all future bus procurements will be zero-emission as it advances toward a fully electric fleet by 2035. For fleets operating at this level of electrification and in a mountainous cold-weather environment, reliability and operational optimization are mission critical, with vehicle availability, charging coordination, and system resilience as important as the infrastructure itself.

BetterFleet’s platform was selected to support the operational realities of electric bus service, delivering more than basic charger control. The system is designed to ensure vehicles are ready for dispatch each day, minimize energy costs, protect electrical infrastructure, and extend battery life through intelligent, transit-specific charging strategies.

“Mountain Line is a progressive transit agency that continues to set a strong example for how zero-emission fleets can be deployed thoughtfully and effectively,” said Daniel Hilson, CEO of BetterFleet. “We’re honored to work with a team that shows electrification can be done well even in places with extreme weather conditions.”

The BetterFleet platform dynamically schedules charging across vehicles and chargers based on actual plug-in times, pull-out schedules, and required energy, ensuring all buses are charged and ready for service. With sequential and simultaneous charging capabilities, built-in time-of-use scheduling automatically shifts charging to off-peak periods, while real-time prioritization ensures operational needs are met.

Automated Load Management continuously monitors site demand and grid capacity, adjusting charging power in real time to stay within defined limits without operator intervention. As Mountain Line expands its infrastructure, new chargers can be easily added to the BetterFleet charge management system.

The deployment also includes BetterFleet’s on site controller, which enables local, real time control of charging and load management. This architecture provides added resilience, allowing critical charging operations to continue even during network interruptions and ensuring consistent service reliability for a highly electrified fleet.

Looking ahead, the platform is designed to integrate with future energy systems as they come online. Mountain Line’s plans include a microgrid with distributed energy resources such as geothermal, solar generation, and battery storage. BetterFleet’s open architecture allows charging operations to be coordinated with these systems over time, supporting greater energy flexibility, cost optimization, and long term resilience as the fleet reaches full electrification.

Together, Mountain Line and BetterFleet are advancing a practical, scalable model for zero-emission transit operations that supports reliability today while laying the foundation for continued fleet electrification in the years ahead.

This deployment builds on BetterFleet’s proven track record delivering charge management systems for transit agencies and municipal fleets across North America, including the Toronto Transit Commission, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Helix Water District, and the City of Roseville, as well as major global operators such as Go-Ahead London and Transit Systems in Sydney.
